Also known as the Asian bell tree or serpent tree, Radermachera sinica is a lush, leafy houseplant with a wonderfully airy look. Its glossy, emerald green leaves are finely divided into lots of pointed leaflets, giving the whole plant a soft, almost fern like texture.
In its native subtropical mountains of Asia it grows into a tall tree, but indoors it stays a manageable, bushy size that suits a bright living room, a sunny landing or a spot beside a big window. Once it finds a place it likes, try to leave it there, as it can drop leaves if it's moved around or caught in a draught.
Care at a glance
Light: Bright light, out of hot midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. It enjoys a sheltered spot outdoors in summer.
Water: Keep the compost evenly moist but never soggy, and ease off a little in winter. Blackening leaves usually mean too much water, yellowing leaves too little.
Humidity: Happy in average rooms. Keep it away from radiators and cold draughts.
Pet note: Generally regarded as non toxic, but we'd still keep it out of nibbling reach.
Supplied in a plastic nursery pot. As a living plant, each one is unique and its shape and fullness will vary.
