The Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium antiquum) is a lush, sculptural fern with glossy, bright green fronds that unfurl from a central rosette, their gently wavy edges and rippled texture giving it real presence. New fronds emerge from the heart of the nest, slowly building into a full, arching crown.

Happy in the humidity of a bathroom or kitchen, and tolerant of lower light, it is an easy going choice for a shelf, stand or shadier corner. As an added bonus, it is non toxic and one of the more pet friendly houseplants.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect to medium light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the fronds.
Water: Keep the compost lightly and evenly moist. Water around the base rather than into the central nest.
Humidity: Loves higher humidity, so thrives in a bathroom or kitchen.
Note: Non toxic and considered pet friendly, though it is still best not chewed.
