The Chinese Money Plant (Pilea peperomioides) is as charming as houseplants come, with round, coin shaped leaves held on slender stems that bob and turn towards the light. Native to southern China, it has a neat, sculptural habit that suits a shelf, desk or windowsill.
Famously sociable, it readily produces baby plantlets around its base that can be potted up and shared. Easy, quick and very forgiving, it is a joy for beginners and collectors alike.
Care at a glance
Light: Bright, indirect light. Turn it regularly for even, balanced growth.
Water: Water when the top few centimetres of compost dry out. Avoid leaving it soggy.
Humidity: Happy in average rooms.
Note: Generally considered non toxic and one of the more pet tolerant houseplants, though still best kept out of reach.
