The Purple Shamrock (Oxalis triangularis), also known as False Shamrock, is pure drama, with deep purple, triangular leaflets held in threes that open and close with the light, folding down at night and lifting like butterfly wings by day. Delicate pale pink flowers appear above the foliage through the growing season.

A herbaceous perennial and one of our bestsellers, it makes a striking contrast on a bright shelf or windowsill and is wonderfully easy going. If it ever looks tired, simply cut it back and let it reshoot from the little bulbs beneath the soil.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the purple colour rich. A little gentle sun is fine.
Water: Water when the top couple of centimetres of compost dry out, easing off if it takes a natural rest.
Humidity: Average rooms are fine.
Note: Best kept away from curious pets, as oxalis can cause an upset stomach if eaten.
