Pilea Peperomioides | Chinese Money Plant
The 'Chinese Money Plant' is a great one for beginners. Really easy to care for, and very forgiving!
Origin: The Yunnan Province of southern China, at the foothills of the Himalayas, where it grows in shaded, rocky forest conditions. It was brought to Europe in 1946 by a Norwegian missionary and spread from friend to friend for decades before becoming widely commercially available in the late 2010s.
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. A spot near an east or west-facing window works beautifully. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch or bleach the distinctive round leaves. Too little light will cause the leaves to darken, growth to slow, and stems to become leggy as the plant reaches toward the light source. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week or two to keep the plant growing evenly rather than leaning.
Water: Allow the top 2 to 3 inches of soil to dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow to drain fully. Never leave the roots sitting in water. Water more frequently in spring and summer and reduce in winter as growth slows. Drooping leaves are the plant's way of telling you it is thirsty.
Fun fact: One of the most rewarding houseplants to own because it freely produces small offset plants, known as babies or pups, around the base of the mother plant. These can be gently separated and potted up to share with friends, which is how this plant earned its nickname the 'Friendship Plant'.
Use a well-draining potting mix and avoid heavy, moisture-retentive soils. Tolerates average household humidity well.
Non-toxic to pets and humans.
Supplied in a plastic nursery pot.
Pots are sold separately.
