Bold, sculptural and full of character, Alocasia 'Jacklyn' (Alocasia tandurusa) is grown for its deeply lobed, wavy edged leaves, held on upright, prettily striped stems. The foliage is a rich, dark green threaded with strongly raised veins, giving each leaf a carved, almost prehistoric look that brings real drama to a room.

It makes a striking statement on a plant stand or side table where its architectural shape can be seen, and looks wonderful alongside softer, leafier plants that set off those bold outlines. Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, it is happiest in warmth and humidity, rewarding a little attention with dramatic new leaves through the growing season.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect. It will cope with a little less, but leaves stay biggest and boldest in good light. Keep it out of direct sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Water: Keep the compost lightly and evenly moist, letting the top couple of centimetres dry between waterings. Take care not to let it sit wet, as it is prone to root rot. Filtered or stood water is kindest.

Humidity: Loves it high. A humidifier, pebble tray or a spot in a bright bathroom or kitchen helps keep leaf edges from going crispy.

Temperature: Warm and steady, ideally 18 to 29C. Keep it away from cold draughts and sudden chills.

Feed: A balanced houseplant feed every four to six weeks through spring and summer. Ease off in autumn and winter as growth slows.

Note: Like all aroids, Jacklyn is toxic if chewed and the sap can irritate skin, so best kept away from curious pets and little ones.
