Sometimes sold as Parthenocissus amazonica, the Amazon jungle vine (Cissus amazonica) is a graceful tropical climber from the Amazon region. Its long, slender leaves are brushed with silvery green veins on top and flushed a deep burgundy underneath, so it looks beautiful from every angle.
It grows with little curling tendrils that grab on to anything nearby, so you can let it trail from a high shelf or hanging pot, or give it a small trellis or hoop to scramble up. It's also a lovely choice for a large terrarium.
Care at a glance
Light: Bright, indirect light or partial shade. Keep it out of direct sun.
Water: Keep the compost lightly moist from spring to autumn, letting the top centimetre dry before watering again. Water more sparingly in winter, and never let it sit in water.
Humidity: Fine in average rooms, but it grows most lushly with higher humidity.
Support: Trails happily, or climbs a small trellis with its tendrils. Trim leggy stems to keep it full.
Pet note: Cissus are generally regarded as non toxic, but we'd still keep it out of nibbling reach.
Supplied in a plastic nursery pot. As a living plant, each one is unique and the length of its trails will vary.
