Autograph Tree | Clusia rosea | glossy paddle leaves
Meet the Autograph Tree, Clusia rosea, a bold, glossy houseplant with real sculptural presence. Its thick, leathery, paddle shaped leaves are a deep olive green and remarkably tough, so tough, in fact, that you can lightly etch your name into one and watch it stay there as the leaf grows. That playful party trick is where the common name comes from, but the real draw is the plant itself, all stout stems and architectural, rubber plant like foliage that brings an instant tropical feel to a room.
Sturdy and easy going, it's a brilliant choice if you want something with impact that doesn't ask for much. Set it somewhere bright as an upright green statement, on a sideboard, in a corner that needs filling, or in a steamy bathroom or kitchen where it'll really thrive. A light prune in spring keeps it compact and full if it starts to stretch.
Care at a glance
Light Bright, filtered light, with shade from hot direct sun. A little gentle morning or evening sun is fine.
Water Keep the soil moist, letting the top few centimetres dry between drinks. Water more freely in spring and summer, moderately in winter, and avoid overwatering as soggy roots lead to discoloured leaves.
Humidity Loves high humidity. Ideal for a steamy kitchen or bathroom, or stood on a tray of damp gravel and misted regularly.
Support No support needed. Prune in spring to keep its shape compact and bushy.
Note Best kept away from curious pets and children, as the leaves and sap are best not chewed.
As a living plant, each one is a little different, so size, shape and leaf form will vary from plant to plant. Yours will be one of a kind.
