With its twisting, curling stems, the Curly Orchid Cactus, Epiphyllum guatemalense 'Monstrose', is one of the most characterful jungle cacti you can grow. Also known as Curly Sue or Curly Locks, it's a naturally occurring mutation of the species, prized for the way its flat green stems corkscrew and arch in every direction. Given time and the right conditions, mature plants can even produce large flowers that open at night.

A true epiphyte from the forests of Guatemala, it grows the way it would in the wild, tumbling from a tree rather than standing upright, so it's made for a hanging pot or a high shelf where the stems can spill and twist. Sculptural and a little unruly, it's a brilliant talking point and an easy one to keep.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning sun is fine, but keep it out of harsh midday sun, which scorches the stems.

Water: Water thoroughly once the top few centimetres of compost have dried, letting excess drain away. Ease right off through winter, and never leave it sitting wet.

Humidity: Happy in average room humidity, a little lusher in more humid spots.

Soil: A free-draining mix, such as a cactus or orchid blend with added bark or perlite.

Note: Best kept out of reach of curious pets, as sources differ on toxicity.

As a living plant, each one grows its own way, so the twist and shape of the stems will vary from the photos. Yours will be one of a kind.
