A modern icon, the Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) is loved for its large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves held on an upright stem. Architectural and full of presence, it brings instant height, structure and a lush, sculptural quality to a room. 

Give it a bright, consistent spot, and it will reward you with bold new leaves. It likes routine, so once it is happy, try not to move it around too much.

'Bambino' is a compact, upright cultivar - a dwarf form, with large, dark, glossy green, veined leaves which are slightly thicker than its larger cousin. The leaves are a touch smaller and thicker, with somewhat lighter veining, and the plant has a naturally compact, upright, branching habit that makes it brilliant for tighter spots.

This is the fiddle leaf fig for shelves, side tables and smaller corners, all the sculptural good looks without needing a whole stretch of floor. Set it somewhere bright, give the leaves an occasional dust, and let it bring a rich, green, contemporary lift to the room. Like all fiddles, it prefers to stay put once it is settled, so find its spot and leave it to do its thing.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect light. A little gentle morning sun is welcome, but avoid harsh midday sun.
Water: Water when the top few centimetres of compost dry out, easing off in winter. Avoid letting it sit wet.
Humidity: Enjoys average to higher humidity and the occasional leaf wipe to keep it glossy.
Note: Best kept away from curious pets, as the sap can irritate if chewed.
