Cool, crisp and quietly elegant, the Flamingo Flower (Anthurium andraeanum 'Ibis') carries red, waxy spathes above a mound of deep green, heart-shaped leaves. Unusual pink spadix.
It is a bright, sculptural plant that suits a shelf, sideboard or windowsill with good light, and pairs beautifully with simpler green foliage that lets those red spathes take centre stage. Give it warmth and a little humidity, and it will keep rewarding you with fresh blooms through its long growing season.
Light: Bright, indirect. Leaves will scorch in direct summer sun, while too little light means fewer flowers.
Water: Water when the top few centimetres of compost have dried, using rainwater or filtered water where you can. Avoid leaving it sitting in soggy compost.
Humidity: Happy in average rooms, lusher with a little extra humidity. A bathroom or kitchen suits it well.
Temperature: Warm and steady, ideally 16 to 30C. Keep it away from cold draughts and chilly spots below 10C.
Feed: A dilute houseplant or orchid feed every couple of weeks from spring to autumn.
Note: All parts are toxic if chewed, and the sap can irritate skin, so best kept away from curious pets and little ones.
As a living plant, size and flowering vary from one to the next, so yours will be one of a kind.
