The Mistletoe Cactus (Rhipsalis monacantha) is one of the more distinctive members of its genus, with thick, flattened green stems edged in fine spines and, unusually for a Rhipsalis, waxy orange flowers in spring that give way to small pale berries. Also known by the botanical names Lepismium monacanthum and Pfeiffera monacantha, it is an epiphytic cactus native to the forests of Bolivia and Argentina, where it grows draped across tree branches rather than baking in the desert.

The freely branching stems build into a full cascade, so it earns its place in a hanging pot or spilling from a tall shelf. A rewarding, fast-growing plant that brings a shot of rainforest colour when those orange blooms appear.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect. A few hours of gentle morning sun encourages flowering, but shield it from harsh afternoon sun.

Water: Water when the top of the medium has dried, then let it drain freely. Reduce watering over winter.

Humidity: Prefers higher humidity than a desert cactus; average rooms are fine, a kitchen or bathroom even better.

Temperature: Warm rooms suit it well; keep it above 5°C and away from cold draughts in winter.

Pet note: Considered non-toxic, though it is best to keep it out of reach of curious paws and mouths.
