A miniature cousin of the Swiss Cheese Plant, the Monkey Leaf (Monstera adansonii) is loved for its delicate, heart-shaped leaves punched through with oval holes, said to resemble a cheeky monkey face. Also sold as Monkey Mask or Monstera Monkey Leaf, it is a trailing and climbing aroid native to Central and South America, where it scrambles through the jungle in search of light. The foliage is thinner and more ruffled than its bigger relative, giving it a softer, more playful look.

It is happy to climb or trail: train it up a moss pole for larger, more dramatic leaves, or let it tumble from a shelf or hanging pot. A quick-charming, characterful plant that suits a bright, humid spot.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Water: Water once the top few centimetres of soil have dried. Take care not to overwater, as soggy roots lead to rot.

Humidity: Thrives in warmth and higher humidity, so a bright bathroom or kitchen suits it well. Mist if your rooms run dry.

Support: Loves a moss pole to climb, developing bigger leaves as it goes, or trail it from a height.

Pet note: Best kept away from curious pets and children, as the leaves can irritate if chewed.
