Also known as Needle Stonecrop, Worm Grass or Japanese Sedum, Sedum lineare is a fresh, easy going little succulent with slender, bright green leaves packed densely along trailing stems. In summer it sends up starry yellow flowers that hover like tiny stars above the foliage. Vigorous and evergreen, it forms a soft carpet of colour that spills prettily over the edge of a pot.

It is wonderfully versatile. Indoors it is happy on a bright windowsill, in a shallow dish or trailing from a shelf, and it makes a lovely partner in a mixed succulent bowl. Outdoors it is fully hardy, ideal for a rockery, a sunny border edge, a green roof or tucked between paving, where it knits into low, drought tolerant ground cover.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright light or full sun. The more sun it gets, the more compact and colourful it stays.
Water: Water sparingly and let the compost dry out between drinks. As a succulent it stores water in its leaves and dislikes sitting wet.
Soil: Free draining. Add grit or perlite to a peat free compost for sharp drainage.
Flowers: Starry yellow flowers in summer, loved by bees and other pollinators.
Hardiness: Fully hardy in most of the UK, tolerating temperatures to around minus 10C, and evergreen all year.
Note: Best kept out of reach of curious pets and children.
