The Orchid Cactus (Epiphyllum pumilum) is a graceful trailing jungle cactus grown for its slender, flattened green stems with softly scalloped edges and, on mature plants, its spectacular flowers. Sometimes called the White Orchid Cactus, it is a close relative of the famous Queen of the Night, and shares that flair for drama: large, funnel-shaped white blooms that open at night and carry a sweet fragrance before closing by morning. Native to the moist forests of Mexico and Central America, it grows as an epiphyte, perched among trees rather than rooted in the ground.

The long, arching stems fall beautifully from a hanging pot or raised planter, making the most of that airy, cascading habit. Easy-going and rewarding, it is prized as much for its fine foliage as for the fleeting magic of its flowers.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect light or a little gentle part-sun. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch the stems.

Water: Keep lightly moist through the growing season, letting the surface dry between waterings. Water more sparingly in winter; a cooler, drier winter rest helps mature plants flower.

Humidity: Enjoys warmth and a little extra humidity, in keeping with its rainforest origins.

Support: Best displayed trailing from a hanging pot or high shelf where the stems can arch and fall.

Pet note: Considered non-toxic, though it is always best to discourage nibbling for the sake of both pets and plant.

Supplied in a 14cm hanging pot. As a living plant, size and form vary from one to the next, so yours will be one of a kind.
