The Philodendron Brasil (Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil') is a fast-growing, easy-care trailing plant with glossy, heart-shaped leaves splashed down the centre with a bold lime and golden-green stripe, as if brushed on by hand. Also known as the Heart Leaf Philodendron, it is a variegated cultivar native to the tropical Americas, and no two leaves carry quite the same pattern. Forgiving and quick to fill out, it is one of the most rewarding trailing houseplants around.

It looks wonderful spilling from a hanging pot or high shelf, or trained up a small moss pole to climb. A brilliant, colourful choice for beginners and busy plant lovers alike.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect light keeps the variegation strong. It tolerates a little less, though the lime striping may fade. Avoid harsh direct sun.

Water: Water when the top of the soil is about half dry, then let it drain well. Avoid leaving the roots soggy.

Humidity: Happy in normal home humidity, though it enjoys a little more. Mist occasionally in dry rooms.

Support: Let it trail from a height, or give it a moss pole to climb for larger leaves.

Pet note: Best kept away from curious pets and children, as the leaves can irritate if chewed.
