Top of many collectors' wish lists, the Pink Princess (Philodendron erubescens 'Pink Princess') is a stunning variegated climber with deep green to burgundy leaves splashed with patches of bubblegum pink, each one held on rich red stems. Also known as the Blushing Philodendron, it is a tropical aroid native to South America, where it climbs and forms aerial roots. No two leaves are alike, and the pink variegation makes every plant a genuine one-off. For all its glamour, it is surprisingly easy-going.

It looks striking trained up a moss pole or trailing from a shelf in a bright spot. Bright, indirect light is the key to keeping that pink coming through strongly.

Care at a glance

Light: Bright, indirect light to hold the variegation. A little gentle morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh direct sun, which scorches the leaves. Too little light and the pink fades.

Water: Water when the top of the soil is partly dry, letting it drain well. Avoid overwatering, which leads to root rot.

Humidity: Fine in normal home humidity, though it thrives with a little more. Mist occasionally for best results.

Support: Loves a moss pole to climb, developing larger leaves as it grows.

Pet note: Best kept away from curious pets and children, as the sap can irritate if chewed.

Supplied in a 12cm nursery pot. As a living plant, size and variegation vary from one to the next, so yours will be one of a kind.
