Architectural and easy going, the Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata 'Zeylanica', also known as Mother in Law's Tongue) fans out its tall, upright leaves in deep green marked with soft, wavy pale banding. Grown here in a generous fan shape, it makes a calm, sculptural statement in a bright corner or a shadier spot alike.

It is about as forgiving as houseplants come, thriving on a little neglect and coping happily with lower light where fussier plants sulk. A striking floor or shelf plant, and a well known air purifier too.

Care at a glance

Light: Happy in bright, indirect light and tolerant of shadier spots. Avoid harsh direct midday sun.

Water: Let the compost dry out almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and drain. Water very little in winter. Overwatering is the one thing it will not forgive.

Humidity: Average rooms are perfect. No extra humidity needed.

Temperature: Warm, average room temperatures suit it well. Keep it away from cold draughts.

Feed: A dilute houseplant feed once or twice through spring and summer is plenty.

Note: Toxic if chewed, so best kept away from curious pets and little ones.

Supplied in a nursery pot. As a living plant, size and shape vary from one to the next, so yours will be one of a kind.
